Nature in Greece

Greece is blessed with one of the most beautiful and stunning scenery on the planet and Greek nature is unique for its richness of flora and fauna. Greek forests constitute a precious natural heritage, not just for Greece but for the whole of Europe. Largely unspoilt, they provide a habitat for the evolution and survival of a large number of species of wild fauna and flora. The countrys wildlife enjoys an enviable position, both the mammals and, primarily, the birds, whether indigenous to the Greek forests or migrating to them.

With over one hundred and fifty inhabitant islands, with a variety of landscape unique in the world, with thousands of years of civilization and hundreds of sites, with excellent beaches, bright blue seas, fertile valleys, gorgeous green landscapes, mountains, forested ravines, turbulent rivers, with ageless history, an incredible profusion of cultural monuments, gracious ancient ruins, Greece has interests to fill years of travel. It is an inspiring destination, with unsurpassed natural beauty. From the untamed mountains and the dramatic gorges of the North to the palm groves of the South, Greece presents a wide spectrum of natural beauty and unusual animal life to the traveler who takes time to explore this special richness of the country.

Plenty of good quality beaches, with golden sands and crystal clear water dot the Greek coastline. The Mediterranean Sea is the bluest and calmest sea in the world and has the cleanest waters, especially around Greece. Some of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe are found in Greece and exploring the country, you can find many secluded coves for your own. Greek coastline exceeds 16,000 km. in length - approximately two-fifths that of the Equator. The shores of Greece are characterized by remarkable variety both in morphology and biological species. Sandy beaches, rocks, lagoons, dunes, river estuaries, coastal swamps, islets, underwater meadows and reefs compose a special, precious natural and tourist resource.

An important place in these coastal ecosystems is held by the habitats of endangered species, such as the Mediterranean seal and the sea turtle, which breed and live in Greece. Striped dolphins and whales also make appearances, along with dozens of bird species. On the other hand, the interior of the mainland is rich in plant life, insects, reptiles, birds and big mammals. Endangered species such as the wolf, the bear and the lynx inhabit the remote parts of the National Parks and reserves of Northern Greece. Natural monuments include fossilized forests and bizzare geological formations.
Activities such as hiking, trekking, biking, climbing, canyoning, rafting, kayaking and scuba diving are widely available throughout Greece and allow visitors to appreciate the natural treasures of the country. |
